The History of C'YA in Regina!

Greetings and blessings,

In the fall of 2002 Patsy Fisher, the Youth Coordinator for the diocese, sent out announcements to parishes, throughout the diocese, inquiring if there is any Young Adults who would be interested in being a part of a Young Adults Group. While this was happening a group had all ready been started by Chris Juchacz. Chris took the beginning steps in getting the group started and we had a couple events in November and December 2002.

In January 2003, Chris moved to Ottawa to attend University. The group continued and near the end of January the Core was established consisting of 6 young adults.

Near the beginning of February Patsy had gathered some people who were interested in getting the Young Adults Group underway. After some discussion it was decided that the all ready existing Young Adults Group would take on the task of coordinating a Diocesan Young Adults Group if they were willing. (It was later decided that parishes throughout Regina would also plan events for Young Adults throughout the year).

The existing group was willing and ready. We are now striving to let the young adults and others in the diocese know about C'YA in Regina. A big advancement was the development of our website and e-mail list. The site was up and running early 2003 and we began contacting everyone via e-mail.

We are all very excited about this opportunity to come together as Young Catholic Adults in the diocese. As we all know as young adults we are often transient and we may not be from Regina or we may be new to the faith and so on. For these reasons we hope this group will help Young Adults find a place where they can come together not only for fellowship but also for faith formation and support.

As the Core we hope to be there to plan events each month for Young Adults in the diocese as well as keep you informed as to other events in and outside of the diocese.

We also hope to include others from outside of Regina into the group. A number of us on the Core are from rural Saskatchewan and we realize how hard it may be to find Catholic/Christian fellowship. If you are such a person, or you know someone living out in small-town Saskatchewan please tell them about our group and encourage them to come. All are welcome!

Lastly, it is our hope to teach and be open to learning about our Catholic faith. Last April, Laura Herauf from the Core attended The North American Vocations Congress in Montreal. During this conference about 100 young adults from North America met and discussed vocations and how it relates to Young Adults. One of the main points that came from these discussions was that Young Adults have the desire to learn more about the Catholic Church. They want to know why we do the thing we do as Catholics? They want to be equipped to live out the faith and to be witnesses. However, many of them don't know where to go, who they can trust and where to begin. Not that we, have all the answers, but we as a Young Adults Group are willing to take the necessary steps in finding the answers and building our faith foundations.

C’YA continues to take the initiative to support the Catholic Young Adults of Regina. C’YA representatives have met with the Archbishop of Regina in order to obtain guidance and support. C’YA has met with those of the Marian Centre in Regina and have subsequently begun a weekly service project, preparing meals for the less fortunate of Regina. In late February 2004 C’YA representatives met with the diocesan council of priests in order to pass on information about C’YA to the priests of the diocese.

C’YA in Regina has held numerous events including:
- Bowling Nights;
- Masses;
- Discussions on: chastity, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Mary;
- Preparing meals for the less fortunate;
- Theology on Tap
- Pilgrimage to Lebret;
- Rider game;
- Prayer;
- Tobogganing;
- Movies;
- And much more.

As well, we are supporting:
- Bible studies; and
- Parish events (Little Flower’s Young Adult’s Group, Praise & Pizza, etc).

C’YA is looking forward to planning upcoming events and is happy to be a strong addition to the Catholic community in the archdiocese of Regina.

C’YA meets with members of the diocesan office and representatives of various parishes from around Regina. C’YA uses this opportunity to listen to the parishes and to let the parishes know what are happening with C’YA. C’YA is striving to develop a relationship with parishes throughout the archdiocese and encourages and hopes to work with the parishes to strengthen the young adult community.

We are very excited about this opportunity in the diocese. It is neat to see that there are a number of people who are interested in being a part of a Young Adults Group. We look forward to meeting each and every one of you.

Spread the word to any other Young Adults 18-35 years old (give or take a few years). If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved please feel free to contact us through this site.

For future events we will continue to e-mail you at the addresses we have been given. (If you wish to be taken off the list at any time please feel free to contact us). We would also encourage you to look at the www.cyainregina.ca website for events happening in the area.

May the love of Christ be with you all.

God Bless
the Core
